AS THE FIRE SWEPT THROUGH THE TINDER-DRY BUILDINGS, RESIDENT GATHERED UP WHAT FEW BELONGINGS THEY COULD AND FLED FOR SAFETY. FIREMEN RACED TO THE SCENE WITH FIVE APPLIANCES BUT WERE HAMPERED BY THICK BILLOWING SMOKE WHICH DARKENED THE SKY FOR MANY HOURS. THEY WERE UNABLE TO GET CLOSE TI THE BURNING BUILDINGS BECAUSE OF THE SWAMP LAND AND HAD TO BE CONTENT IN PREVENTING THE FIRE SPREADING BEYOND THE VICINITY OF THE BLAZING SETTLEMENT.

FIREMEN BELIEVE THE FIRE STARTED IN THE ROOF OF ONE HUT WHERE JOSS STICKS AND PAPER WERE BEING BURNT TO CELEBRATE THE FESTIVAL OF THE FIRST DAY OF THE TENTH CHINESE LUNAR MONTH.

A NEARBY SCHOOL WAS CONVERTED INTO AN EMERGENCY RELIEF CENTRE. SOME INJURED VICTIMS WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL WHILE OTHERS WERE REGISTERED FOR ACCOMMODATION IN GOVERNMENT-BUILT LOW COST FLATS....
