  • Description

The Malagasy Republic and Tanzania have decided to establish diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level.

On Thursday (June 28) the Tanzanian Foreign Minister John Malecela who has been on a six day visit to the Malagasy Republic and his Malagasy counterpart Captain Didier Ratsiraka signed the diplomatic accord in Tananarive.

Trade and educational and cultural agreements between the two countries were also signed.

Despite their proximity the two countries have had little formal contact in the past.

On his return to Dar Es Salaam Mr. Malecela said he foresaw no question of trade rivalry between Tanzania and Malagasy as two of the world's major clove producing countries. Co-operation between the two countries would help to strengthen their position in world trading.

"If you put Madagascar and Tanzania together they would be what one would call the world's kings of cloves," said Mr. Malecela.

During his visit Mr. Malecela said it was a source of great joy that the Government of Malagasy was contributing in the liberation struggle in Africa.

Mr. Malecela said that Malagasy was now paying its dues to the OAU Liberation Committee "a thing they didn't do in the past."
