Playing on the Hashimoto Country Club course at Wakayama, 350 kilometres (218 miles) west of tokyo, the Americans amassed a total of 1,752 storkes during the three day competition -- nine strokes less then the Japanese team total. Sugihara finished with a three-round total of 209 strokes with Green just behind on 210. Defending champion Al Geiberger took sixth place with 219 strokes.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of golf enthusiasts flocked to the Hashimoto golf course at Wakayama west of Tokyo on Sunday for the final round of the United States - Japan professional golf tournament. Hubert Green was the front runner for the American team, battling for first place with Japan's Teruo Sugihara.

Green began the day if first place. But as the day wore on, Green slipped behind three strokes. By the end of the final round of the three-day tournament, he was just one point behind Sugihara.

Sugihara played steadily throughout the day and made few mistakes in challenging the American. He hit seventy eight strokes in the first round, and sixty eight on the second day .... keeping within easy reach of the title. He finished the third end final round in another sixty eight strokes. This gave him a total of two hundred and nine strokes ---- one ahead of Hubert Green.

Sugihara might have finished with a two-point lead, but overshot his last putt of the tournament. But by this stage, it was all over and he and the title anyway. He picked up seven thousand pounds for the win.

But it was the Americans who won the team prize of six thousand pound -- a prize they've lost only once.
