Background: A PROPOSED 26-MILE HIGHWAY IN NORTHERN THAILAND WILL LINK TAK WITH MAE SOD ON THE BURMESE BORDER -- THE STARTING POINT OF THE ASIAN HIGHWAY.

ON SUNDAY (MAR 12), THAI PRIME MINISTER FIELD MARSHAL THANOM KITTIKACHORN OPENED THE BASE DEPOT OF THE HIGHWAY KNOWN AS THAI-AUSTRALIA ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROJECT. THE CEREMONY WAS HELD AT TAK PROVINCE, ABOUT 220 MILES NORTHWEST OF BANGKOK AND ATTENDED BY THE AUSTRALIAN AMBASSADOR, MR. ALAN LOOMES AND A BODY OF DIGNITARIES.

THE DEPOT WILL HOUSE BOTH THAI AND AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS AND COMPRISES A LARGE COMPLEX OF HOUSES, WORKSHOPS, OFFICES AND STORE BUILDINGS.

THE TAK-MAE SOD HIGHWAY WILL COST 300-MILLION BAHT (MORE THAT GBP5-MILLION STERLING). AUSTRALIA WILL PROVIDE A THIRD AND THAILAND TWO THIRDS OF THE BUDGET.

THE HIGHWAY -- 33 FEET WIDE -- IS AN ALL-WEATHER ROAD WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED WITHIN FIVE YEARS. IT WILL SHORTEN THE PRESENT BUMBY, UNCOMFORTABLE RIDE TO A SMOOTH AND PLEASANT TWO-HOUR JOURNEY BETWEEN THE TWO POINTS.

THE HIGHWAY WILL ALSO PROVIDE AN ACCESS TO THE POTENTIALLY RICH MINERAL DEPOSITS AT PRESENT BEING PROSPECTED IN THE MOUNTAIN NEAR MAE SOD, A LUSH AND FERTILE VALLEY.

TWENTY-THREE AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS AND TECHNICIANS, 50 THAI ENGINEERS, TECHNICIANS AND CLERICAL STAFF, AND 400 PLANT OPERATORS, MECHANICS AND LABOURERS WILL WORK ON THE PROJECT.

THE PRELIMINARY WORK ON THE ROAD BEGAN LAST APRIL.
