  • Description

ONE HUNDRED "EVER-READIES" - BRITAIN'S LATEST PART-TIME SOLDIERS - FLEW INTO SINGAPORE ON APRIL 19 FOR A TEN-DAY FAR EAST TRAINING COURSE.

THE TROOPS, MEMBERS OF THE NEW SPECIALISED BRANCH OF THE TERRITORIAL ARMY, DURING THEIR STAY, WILL BE INTEGRATED WITH THE WORKING BRITISH ARMY UNITS IN SINGAPORE AND MALAYA TO WHICH THEY WOULD BE SENT IN EMERGENCIES.

AT A SINGAPORE BRITISH ARMY CAMP, THE TROOPS WERE BRIEFED ON TROPICAL DISEASES BY MAJOR TED ROBERTS, CHIEF INSTRUCTION OF THE BRITISH ARMY SCHOOL OF HEALTH. LATER, THEY WERE GIVEN ARMY KITS.

SOME HOURS LATER, HALF OF THE TROOPS LEFT IN ARMY TRUCKS FOR THE TERENDAK CAMP - A BRITISH ARMY CANTONMENT IN MALACCA, WEST OF MALAYA.

THE FOLLOWING DAY, APRIL 20, THE OTHER HALF WERE PLACED IN VARIOUS ARMY UNITS, INCLUDING THE ARMOURED CARS. LATER IN THE DAY, A FEW OF THEM DROVE IN ARMOURED CARS ALONG JUNGLE ROADS.

THE "EVER-READIES" ARE SCHEDULED FOR JUNGLE TRAINING NEARLY NEXT WEEK.

EARLIER, ANOTHER HUNDRED OF THEM STOPPED IN SINGAPORE FOR AN HOUR ON THEIR WAY TO THE BRITISH COLONY OF HONG KONG.

THE 200 "EVER-READIES" WERE THE FIRST BATCH OUT OF THE 4,500-STRONG IN BRITAIN, TO BE SENT OUT TO THE FAR EAST FOR SPECIALIST TRAINING.
