  • Description

The leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Yasser Arafat, visited Egypt on Tuesday(18 October) for further talks on the possibility of reconvening the Middle East peace conference in Geneva.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Arafat was welcomed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat at the Tahra Palace in Cairo. It was the Palestinian leader's second meeting with Mr. Sadat this month. They discussed a working paper sent by the United States to Arab Countries, proposing ways of resuming the peace talks. The paper was drawn up after talks by American Secretary of State, Cyrus Vance, with Arab leaders and Israel's Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan. Israel has refused to sit down at the conference table with an official PLO delegation. However, the paper allows for Palestinians to be included in a unified Arab delegation. America is now awaiting reactions to the proposals from all parties. Mr. Arafat also spoke to Egyptian Foreign Minister Mr. Ismail Fahmi, who has expressed 'cautious optimism' on the chances of reconvening the Geneva Conference before the end of the year. Mr. Arafat has been acting as mediator between Egypt and the Libyan Jamahiriyah since a fierce border war broke out between the two states last July.
