  • Description

The Arab Defence Council began its latest session with a public meeting in Cairo on Saturday (January 27).

Two of the main items on the agenda are tactics against Israel and the holding of an Arab summit conference. Other topics for discussion include contributions to the National Fund - covering both finance to "frond-line" states and general Arab economic development - and an examination of foreign economic interests in Arab countries.

SYNOPSIS: At the Arab League building in Cairo, foreign and defence ministers from Arab countries are attending the latest session of the Arab Defence Council. Eighteen member states are represented.

The Egyptian delegation has been leading moves to improve relations between Arab countries, including its own differences with Jordan and Sudan.

Bahrain is among the oil states which are being urged to contribute more money to countries in the front line against Israel.

Military strategy against Israel in one of the most important themes of the conference. When the council last met, in Kuwait in November, members could not agree on a campaign plan.

The Defence Council hopes to formulate a policy for strengthening Jordan's Eastern Front. Meanwhile, Syria is asking for more help, following intensifying border skirmishes.

Although the Arab states are united in their desire to regain lands lost to Israel in the 1967 conflict, they have been unable to agree on an appropriate policy. The Defence Council hopes to hammer out a strategy which will then be presented to an Arab summit conference for ratification.

The conference is also concerned with finance. It will discuss contributions of Arab states to the National fund, both in relation to helping the front-line countries and to Arab economic development in general. Foreign economic interests in Arab countries will also be examined. A special report has been drawn up by the General Secretariat of the Arab League.
