  • Description

THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NEPALESE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS, DR. TULSI GIRI, HAS ANNOUNCED THE OPENING OF A NEW ROAD FOR SINGLE-LANE TRAFFIC BETWEEN KATMANDU AND THE TIBETAN BORDER VILLAGE OF KODARI. THE ROAD, ABOUT 70 MILES (114 KILOMETRES) LONG, IS EXPECTED TO BE READY FOR TWO-LANE TRAFFIC IN 1966.

THE BUILDING OF THE KATMANDU-KODARI ROAD BEGAN LAST YEAR UNDER AN AGREEMENT SIGNED IN 1960 BETWEEN THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC AND NEPAL, A SMALL AUTONOMOUS KINGDOM BETWEEN CHINA AND INDIA ON THE SLOPES OF THE HIMALAYAS. THE WORK WAS CARRIED OUT BY 60 CHINESE ENGINEERS, 500 SKILLED CHINESE LABOURERS AND SOME 10,000 NEPALESE LABOURERS. ESTIMATED COST IS ABOUT GBP520,000.

WORK WENT ON "AROUND THE CLOCK" TO HAVE THE ROAD READY FOR THE APPROACHING MONSOON SEASON. ALTHOUGH ABOUT 100 CULVERTS AND BRIDGES ARE STILL TO BE BUILT, AND THE SURFACE TO BE TARRED, THE ROAD WAS DECLARED OPEN TO SINGLE LANE TRAFFIC LAST SATURDAY. THE NEW ROAD WILL ULTIMATELY CONNECT KATMANDU WITH TIBETAN CAPITAL, LHASA, AND MAY EVEN BE EXTENDED FURTHER TO PEKING. THE BUILDING OF THE ROAD HAS BEEN BITTERLY CRITICISED IN INDIA, WHOSE GOVERNMENT FEARS IT MIGHT BE USED BY THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA AS A ???
