    HONG KONG POLICE USED TEAR GAS TO DISPERSE HOSTILE PRO-PEKING CROWDS AND IMPOSED A SECOND CURFEW TODAY (FRIDAY) TO PREVENT RENEWED VIOLENCE IN AN INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT OF MAINLAND KOWLOON. YESTERDAY, POLICE ARRESTED ABOUT 90 DEMONSTRATORS, FINALLY DISPERSING HUGE CROWDS OF CHINESE WORKERS WHO HURLED STONES AT THEM AND CHANTED MAO TSE-TUNG SLOGANS.

    THE TROUBLE BEGAN OVER A WAGES DISPUTE AT AN ARTIFICIAL FLOWERS FACTORY IN SAN PO KONG, KOWLOON, AND THE DISMISSAL OF 20 WORKERS AS REDUNDANT. THE POLICE MOVED IN YESTERDAY AS HUNDREDS OF STRIKERS AND THEIR SYMPHATISERS DEMONSTRATED IN THE STREETS.THE DEMONSTRATORS HURLED STONES AT THE POLICE, WHO RESPONDED WITH TEAR GAS AND NON-LETHAL WOODEN PELLETS FIRED FROM SPECIAL GUNS. AT LEAST 11 PEOPLE, INCLUDING A GIRL HIT IN THE KNEE BY A WOODEN PELLET, WERE INJURED.

    SCATTERED STREET FIRES BLAZED AND POLICE WERE STILL BATTLING TO RESTORE ORDER LAST NIGHT, AFTER A CURFEW HAD BEEN IMPOSED. SOME 600 RIOT POLICE PATROLLED KOWLOON TO ENFORCE THE CURFEW. ALL POLICE LEAVE WAS CANCELLED AND AUXILIARY FORCES PLACED ON ALERT. MANY OF THE DEMONSTRATORS HAVE BEEN YOUNG PEOPLE CARRYING COPIES OF BOOKS BY MAO TSE-TUNG IN EMULATION OF THE PEKING "RED GUARDS".

    (TODAY, POLICE DISPERSED A LUNCHTIME GATHERING OF ABOUT 4,000 CHINESE DEMONSTRATORS, INCLUDING SOME ARMED WITH IRON BARS. ALL SCHOOLS WERE CLOSED IN KOWLOON TODAY AND THE NIGHT CURFEW HAS BEEN RENEWED.)
