Background: Sudanese President Jaafar el-Nimeiry arrived in Dubai on Wednesday (April 26) during a five-day official visit which included talks with government leaders of the Union of Arab Emirates on the Arab situation and bilateral relations.

One result of the talks was an announcement that the two countries regard the three Arabian Gulf islands occupied by Iran last year as an integral part of the Arab Nation.

Last November, Iran occupied the islands of Greater and Lesser Tumb and Abu Musa. Iran said the occupation was within its "legitimate sovereign rights" and was aimed at safeguarding from passage through the Arabian Gulf and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of oil to world markets.

But immediately after the occupation, Iraq severed diplomatic relations with Iran and Britain whose military presence in the area ended a day earlier.

In a communique issued by the Sudan and the Union at the end of President Nimeiry's visit, the two countries expressed support for the Palestinian people -- and African countries in their struggle against apartheid.

The Union also announced it had set up a committee to raise funds to help resettle refugees in Southern Sudan following the and of the 16-year Sudanese civil war, the communique said.
