Background: Martinique, an island in the French West Indies, has been chosen as the venue for a three-day meeting between President Ford of the Untied States and President Ghiscard D'Estaing of France.

The venue was announced by a spokesman for the Elysee Palace in Paris on Monday (7 October). The communique said the tow leaders would discuss questions of mutual interest but gave no details of the agenda.

The talks -- due to begin on 14 December -- will be the first between president Ford and M. Giscard since they took office. The last France-American meeting was held in Iceland between President Pompidou and President Nixon in May 1973.

The summit meeting will probably bring much publicity to the little Caribbean Island. Martinique, covering 420 square miles (1.100 sq.kms.), has been in French possession since 1635. It is now a full-fledged French Department with representatives in the French National Assembly.

About half a million people live on the island, earning their living mainly by growing bananas and sugar, and producing rum.

The Franco-American summit will be held in the capital and main commercial centre, Fort-de-France, a city with a population of about 100,000.
