SYNOPSIS: The Chief Engineer of the N.R.M.A., Mr. Bill Gaffnoy said today that an engine being development by a Perth engineer showed great potential.
Yesterday, the Broken Hill Proprietary Company announced it would go into partnership with Mr. Ralph Sarich, aged 33, of Perth to develop his new engine. It's not a rotary engine. Mr. Sarich calls it an "orbital internal combustion engine" -- the piston does not revolve in the engine casing but has a circular orbital path. The poppet valves used in the prototype will be changed to cut down the number of moving parts. Made of cast iron and aluminium alloy, it weighs one-quarter of a conventional six-cylinder engine.
For those more mechanically minded, you can find out further details of the engine on "The Inventors" programme to be shown later this evening.
