Background: In the Ivory Coast, nine cabinet minister, including the Foreign and Finance Ministers, have been sacked from their posts as a result of a major Government shakeup announced by President Felix Houphouet-Boigny on Wednesday (20 July). The move comes just five days after the President told the National Council of his ruling Democratic Party that it was time to take stock of the country's economic and social condition after seventeen years of independence.

SYNOPSIS: Those whose jobs it will be to take stock of the growing problems now confronting the Ivory Coast will be the 30 members of the new Cabinet. Problems such as rising inflation and spreading corruption will be top of the Cabinet's new agenda.

President Houphouet-Boigny has urged a relentless fight against bribery and corruption and called for an increase in the allocation of low-cost housing and exploitation of the country's timber and coconut reserves.

Most of the new responsibilities fall on Mr Abdoulaye Kone who takes the top economic and financial post, and Mr Aka Simeon, the Ivory Coast's United Nations Representative will take over at Foreign Affairs.
