  • Description

Two Finnish soldiers of the United Nations Emergency Force were killed in an unmarked Egyptian minefield on the West Bank of the Suez Canal on Friday (15 February). The U.N. Command in Israel said another six Finnish soldiers were wounded in two explosions.

The soldiers were travelling in a truck which hit the minefield. They were rushing to the resuce of a Finnish captain who had been injured by an anti-personnel mine.

The incident occurred 16 kilometres (10 miles) west of Kasfarit - an area recently evacuated by Israeli forces.1
The wounded soldiers were evacuated by helicopter, and taken to a hospital near Tel Aviv. The bodies of the dead were taken to a hospital in Cairo.

Israeli Army sources said all Israeli minefields left uncleared in the area had been fenced and marked on maps. Unmarked Egyptian minefields were brought to the attention of the U.N. Force before the Israelis withdraw.
