  • Description

The Ivory Coast's celebrations marking the first decade of Independence from French rule began of Saturday (25 July) with Commercial Week in Treichville, a district of the capital, Abidjan.

Shops in Treichville's main street, Eighth Avenue, hung out their flags, bunting and banners, and set up stalls on the pavement, where they offered their wares at cheaper than normal prices.

Then came the big Parade to start the Commercial Week, led by the Abidjan Majorettes, who marched and pirouetted to the music of the band of the National Gendarmerie.

Finally came a parade of cars, each driven by or carrying as passenger a local beauty, competing in the beauty contest organised by the Treichville Municipality, with a Cup for the best-presented car and beauty queen.

Treichville's Deputy Mayor Mr. Kouassi Lenoir presented the winner, Mademoiselle Odile Nguessan, with her prize, watched by the President of the Commercial Week, Madame Thivrier.
