  • Description

Thousands of people from the Ada area of Ghoana joined in the revelry of the annual Asafotu-Fiam purification festival this week at the town of Big Ada.

SYNOPSIS: Wearing a solid gold headband, the district chief of Dangme, Mr. Onyina-Mensah was carried in the procession to mark the beginning of the festival. He was one of the several important chiefs to be afforded the honour. The ancestral stools, on which they are carried were taken to the seaside for cleansing. The are a symbol of power.

The Asafotu-Fiam, like many festivals in Ghana, has an atmosphere of gaiety and celebration. But the day's events adhere strictly to ancient traditions. However, the festivals serve as a link between the past and present. Most of the people are practising Christians and attend church services during the festival.

Although the festival at Big Ada is a peaceful affair, young men beat war drums and fire guns into the air.

The dancing and singing continued into the night. But the festival had a more serious note. Chief Onyina-Mensah's speech was strongly patriotic. He urged the people to assess their progress during the past year and not to be content with celebrating alone. He reviewed the building projects in the Ada region. On a more practical theme, he said everyone must help the government meet their demands for an improved standard of living. He said they should volunteer labour for community projects and pay their rates to help with finance.
