  • Description

Four Palestinian guerrillas and two civilians were killed when Israeli troops stormed a farmhouse in the northern Israeli village of Fkar Yuval on Sunday morning (15 June). The move came after the guerrillas had crossed the border from Lebanon overnight and taken a family hostage.

The dead included the farm's owner, Mr.Yaacov Mordachai, and his brother-in-law. Other members of the family, including a seven-month-old child, were also injured.

An Iraqi-backed guerrilla group known as the Arab Liberation Front (ALF) has claimed responsibility. Israeli troops ignored guerrilla demands for the release of a number of prisoners in Israeli jails -- including the head of the Greek Catholic Church in Israel, convinced of arms smuggling earlier this year -- and followed their usual practice by attacking the farmhouse to kill the intruders.

Defence Minister Shimon Peres interrupted a visit elsewhere in northern Israel to view the scene of the guerrilla raid. he praised the villagers and Israeli troops for their quick handling of the situation.

The raid was the first into Israel by guerrillas since an attack on Tel Aviv itself some three months ago in which eighteen people died.

Israeli Armed Forces retaliated to the Fkar Yuval raid later on Sunday with a series of air raids on the Lebanese border village of Kfa Shouba. One woman was reported killed and a number of other villagers injured in the attack. Two hours later Israeli artillery opened fire on the hills around nearby Khraibeh and Rashayah El-Foukhar.
