  • Description

ONE OF THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE COLLECTIONS OF FRENCH ART ASSEMBLED IN RECENT YEARS WENT ON SHOW AT THE LOUVRE IN PARIS TODAY (THURSDAY). THE PAINTING - 102 OF THEM - HAVE BEEN LOANED TO FRANCE BY LENINGRAD AND MOSCOW MUSEUMS FOR THE NEXT FOUR MONTHS.

THE EXHIBITION HAS BEEN ARRANGED AS PART OF CULTURAL EXCHANGES BETWEEN THE SOVIET UNION AND FRANCE. AND FOR THE FRENCH IT WILL PROVIDE THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO SEE WORKS BY IMPRESSIONISTS AND POST-IMPRESSIONISTS SOME OF WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN SEEN IN WESTERN EUROPE FOR SEVENTY YEARS MORE.

THE PUSHKIN MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS IN MOSCOW AND THE HERMITAGE IN LENINGRAD TOGETHER OWN OF THE FINEST COLLECTIONS OF FRENCH ART RANGING FROM THE SIXTEENTH TO THE TWENTIETH CENTURIES. THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE COLLECTIONS WERE LAID BY CATHERINE THE GREAT AND PETER THE GREAT, BOTH COLLECTORS OF ART ON A GRAND SCALE.

HOWEVER, IT WAS THE PURCHASES OF SERGEI SHCHUKIN AND IVAN MOROSOV, BOTH TEXTILE MAGNATES OF THE LAST CENTURY, WHO BROUGHT TO RUSSIA MANY OF HER NOW PRICELESS PAINTINGS BY THE FRENCH PAINTERS OF THE LAST HUNDRED YEARS.

IT IS, AS M. GAETAN PICON, DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE MINISTRY OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS, SAYS - 'THE MOST IMPORTANT EXHIBITION OF ART WHICH THE SOVIET UNION HAS EVER ORGANISED OUTSIDE ITS OWN BORDERS.'
