  • Description

Thousands of Portuguese Socialist Party supporters protesting against Communist policies demonstrated in the streets of the capital, Lisbon on Friday (2 May)
But hundreds of heavily-armed security troops, backed by armoured cars, guarded the site the Socialists had chosen for their rally -- earlier outlawed by Prime Minister Vasco Goncalves. They prevented the demonstrators, who had marched to the site through the streets, from entering it.

The 30,000 demonstrators held the march following a clash with Communists at a May Day rally the day before. The incident arose when Specialist Party leader Mario Spares was allegedly denied entry into the meeting.

They finally broke up when Mr. Soares, reportedly acting under pressure from the military rulers, ordered them to disperse.

In last month's general elections the Socialist Party polled 38 per cent against the Communist Party's 12.
