  • Description

MRS. JACQUELINE KENNEDY, WIFE OF THE U.S. PRESIDENT, LAUNCHED AMERICA'S LARGEST NUCLEAR POWERED SUBMARINE, THE "LAFAYETTE", AT GROTON, CONNECTICUT, MAY 8. THE 7,000-TON CRAFT IS NAMED AFTER THE MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE, THE FRENCH GENERAL WHO SERVED IN WASHINGTON'S ARMY DURING THE AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE.

AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION SHIPYARD, MRS. KENNEDY ENCOUNTERED WOMEN PACIFISTS, CARRYING PLACARDS READING: "NO TESTS, EAST OR WEST", AND ONE QUOTING AN EXCERPT OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S SPEECH BEFORE THE UNITED NATIONS THAT "WEAPONS OF WAR MUST BE ABOLISHED BEFORE THEY ABOLISH US".

ON A FLAG-DRAPED PLATFORM, MRS. KENNEDY SMASHED A BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE AGAINST THE SUBMARINE'S BOW, AND THE SHIP GLIDED GRACEFULLY DOWN THE SLIPWAY INTO THE RIVER THAMES.

THE "LAFAYETTE" - ELEVENTH NUCLEAR POWERED SUBMARINE TO ENTER SERVICE WITH THE U.S. NAVY - IS THE FIRST SUBMARINE DESIGNED TO FIRE THE 2,500-MILE-RANGE A-3 "POLARIS" MISSILE.
