  • Description

IN MEXICO CITY, A MEDICAL CENTRE, COMPLETE WITH SOME OF THE WORLD'S MOST MODERN EQUIPMENT IS TESTING MEXICAN ATHLETES' REACTIONS TO CLIMATE AND HIGH ALTITUDE (7,350 FEET, (2,200 METRES).

DOCTORS SAY THAT THE TESTS SHOVED INDICATE LIKELY PERFORMANCES IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES EVENTS HELD IN OCTOBER. THE ATHLETE'S UNDERGOING THE PRESENT TESTS WERE BORN AT SEA LEVEL.

AFTER THE INITIAL TESTS, THE DIRECTOR OF THE MEDICAL CENTRE, MR. ANTONIO ZAPATA, SAID THAT THE HIGH ALTITUDE, DIDN'T AFFECT THE ATHLETES AND HEALTHY PERSON COULD EASILY ADAPT TO THE CONDITIONS IN 10 TO 45 DAYS.

THE LABORATORY EQUIPMENT CAN MEASURE AN ATHLETE'S CAPACITY TO ABSORB OXYGEN IN THE ALTITUDE AND HIS GENERAL BLOOD CONDITION. A HEART-RATE TELEMETER, MADE IN WEST GERMANY, ENABLES THE DOCTORS TO HEAR A PERSON'S HEART-BEAT AND MEASURE THE BLOOD PRESSURE WHILE HE'S RUNNING.

HAVING STUDIED THE RESULTS OF THE MEDICAL CENTRE TESTS, MOST DOCTORS SAID THAT THERE WAS NO REASON WHY A PERSON COULD NOT REPEAT A PERFORMANCE MADE AT SEA-LEVEL AT THE HIGH ALTITUDE.
