Students at Madrid University on Wednesday trampled, spat upon and burned pictures of the Spanish Chief of State. General Franco, in protest against the arrest of student leaders.
After a meeting of about 15-hundred students in the science faculty, a group of them raided the dean's office, smashing windows, overturning chairs, and destroying a portrait of General Franco.
After their raid on the dean's office, the students marched toward the office of the rector, calling for his resignation and demanding the withdrawal of Spanish police from the university.
The students stoned a car. Hundreds of steel-helmeted police made repeated charges at the students, forcing them back into the university.
Three student leaders were arrested during a search by police of the Student's Union offices at the University. They have been detained for issuing illegal propaganda based upon evidence the police recovered during the search.
The demonstrators demanded the resignation of the university rector because he was reported to have authorised the police search of the offices.
