  • Description

A small group of mothers, children and college students picketed Friday (12 August) in front of the Roman Catholic cathedral of St, Patrick's in New York City to protest the worldwide church's ban on artificial methods of birth control.

The protesting group was made up mostly of members of a Parent's Aid Society, which offers free birth control information to members of low income neighbourhoods and operates a birth control clinic in the near-by town of Hempstead, Long Island.

The demonstration is believed to have been the first dealing with the birth control issue to have taken place in front of the cathedral.
