    The Court Martial of a Ugandan Army Sergeant charged with murdering a Kenyan Air Force Lieutenant, began at the Mbale Army Barracks in Uganda on Monday (4 December). Station Sergeant Arkangelo Balu of the Air and Seaborne Battalion, was accused of murdering Second Lieutenant Hussein Omar in March. At the time, Lieutenant Omar was on holiday at Tororo in Uganda, where Sergeant Balu was stationed.

    The sergeant is also charged with unlawfully wounding Lieutenant Benjamin Kashuba of the Ugandan Army on the same day. The Mbale Army Barracks, where the Court Martial is being held, is 150 miles (240 kilometres) east of the capital, Kampala.

    The Court Martial is the first to be held in Uganda since president Idi Amin Came to power two years ago. The chief governing body of the country, the Uganda Defence Council, ordered the Court Martial when it sat on November 29 under the chairmanship of General Amin.

    Officers from the Kanyan Armed Forces Headquarters, the Kenyan Air Force and the Kenyan Ministry of Defence were invited to attend the Court Martial as observers.
