Background: Representatives from 23 African countries assembled in Accra, Ghana yesterday (Thursday) to discuss matters of Law relating specially to Africa. It's the first time the seminar has been held in Ghana.

Attending the seminar are delegates from: Ghana, Algeria, Burundi, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Gambia, the Ivory Coast, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, the Malagasy Republic, Morocco, Nigeria, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, the Sudan, U.A.R., Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Upper Volta and Zambia.

The seminar was held under the auspices of the United Nations. The major aim is to promote the teaching, study, dissemination and wider appreciation of international law as a means of strengthening international peace and security and of promoting friendly relations among states.

Opening the discussions, the Minister for Defence and Acting Prime Minister, Mr Kwesi Lamptey said that Africa's emergence on the world political scene has had a considerable impact not only on the principles of the substantive law as it has been known for decades, but also on the scope of its jurisdiction.

Among the other speakers was the Executive Director of the United Nations Institute of Training and Research, Chief Adebo who said that the conference was discussing legal problems which were important for African states as a consequence of colonialism.
