Background: SYNOPSIS: But other say that violent demonstrations simply give more publicity to the Front.
The National Front has made strong showings at a number of local elections in recent months. It has not members of Parliament but has succeeded in finishing above the Liberals -- traditionally, Britain's third largest party -- at a few local elections. Some political observers say the Front's recent electoral successes should by seen in the context of the general breakdown of Britain's two-party system. But there are fears that Britain's high unemployment rate may create supports for the Front's polices and there by polarise racial attitudes.
