    AT SHEPPERTON STUDIOS OUTSIDE LONDON LAST SUNDAY (7TH SEPTEMBER), THE MAKERS OF A NEW HISTORICAL FILM, "CROMWELL", STAGED ONE OF THE KEY SCENES WHEN ALEC GUINNESS, WHO PLAYS KING CHARLES I, STEPPED ON TO THE SCAFFOLD TO FACE HIS EXECUTIONER.

    THE FILMING OF "CROMWELL" - AN IRVING ALLEN PRODUCTION FOR COLUMBIA PICTURES, STARRING RICHARD HARRIS IN THE TITLE ROLE, SIR ALEC GUINNESS AS KING CHARLES AND DOROTHY TUTIN AS HIS QUEEN - BEGAN IN MAY OF THIS YEAR AT PAMPLONA IN NORTHERN SPAIN, WHERE MORE THAN THREE THOUSAND MEN SPENT SIX WEEKS RECREATING THE BATTLES OF THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR. THEY WERE UNDER THE COMMAND OF KEN HUGHES, WHO DIRECTS THE FILM FROM HIS OWN SCREENPLAY. ALSO IN THE CAST ARE ROBERT MORLEY, FRANK FINLAY AND PATRICK WYMARK.

    AT SHEPPERTON STUDIOS THERE ARE COMPLETE REPLICAS OF SEVERAL HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND SETTINGS IN WHICH THE STORY OF CROMWELL AND CHARLES I WAS PLAYED OUT.

    THE MOST IMPRESSIVE SITE IS THE RECREATION OF PARLIAMENT SQUARE. THE FACADES OF WESTMINSTER ABBEY, HOUSE OF COMMONS AND WEST MINSTER HALL TOWERED OVER THE ACTORS AND TECHNICIANS WHEN THEY CAME RE-ENACTMENT OF THE EVENTS OF JANUARY 30TH, 1649. ATTENTION CENTRED ON THE REPLICA OF 17TH CENTURY WHITEHALL WITH BANQUETING HOUSE FROM WHICH THE KING STEPPED OUT ON TO THE SCAFFOLD ERECTED FOR HIS EXECUTION.

    THERE WAS A BREAK FOR LUNCH HALF-WAY THROUGH THE DAY'S WORK - THEN ALEC GUINNESS AND THE SUPPORTING CAST WERE READY TO PROCEED WITH THEIR GREAT SCENE.
