  • Description

Despite the civil war in Lebanon which has now continued for about 17 months, there are still some ares of peace in the country.

SYNOPSIS: One such area is the Dbayeh Palestinian camp although it is in rightist held east Beirut. The camp surrendered to right-wing Christian forces in December last year and all the Palestinian fighters who were in the camp then left. Those residents who wanted to stay were allowed to, on condition they surrendered their arms. The camp avoided much of the heavy fighting and there was very little damage to its buildings.

The people of Dbayeh are allowed to carry on their normal activities within the camp, but they are not allowed to leave the camp area. Right-wing Lebanese forces protect the camp and since the fall of the Tel Al-Zaatar Palestinian camp last month and the Moslem enclave of Nabaa, they have controlled all of east Beirut.

There is still heavy fighting between the various factions in Lebanon, and political efforts by Syria have so far not brought an end to the fighting. However, the residents of Dbayeh have now been able to live in peace for about ten months, despite the continuing conflict.
