  • Description

The Adriatic Sea, whipped up by seasonal winds, battered dykes outsides Venice yesterday, raising the water level in the city to 80 centimetres (32 inches) above normal. St. Mark's Square, the most famous in the city, was flooded.

Shopkeepers and residents had been warned of the dangers, and moved their furniture and merchandise to higher floors. The inhabitants remained calm, and some of the younger people even took the opportunity to do some canoeing.

Last November, vilent storms broke dykes outside Venice, but the city escaped serious damage.
