    When the Shah and Empress of Iran arrived at the Town Hall in Melbourne, Australia, for a civic welcome on Tuesday (24 September), there were clashes between the police and demonstrators.

    The protesters were mainly Australian supporters of The Committee Against Repression in Iran. Two similar demonstrations in Sydney the previous night had passed off without violence.

    When the Shah and his wife arrived at the Melbourne Town Hall, the demonstrators shouted slogans such as "Go home butcher", and the ???e drowned out a speech by the Mayor, Mr. Ron Walker, and the S???'s reply.

    Police grabbed placards from demonstrators, several punches were thrown, and some spectators fell to the ground. An 18 year-old girl ??? treated in hospital for a suspected broken nose and concussion, after being flung against a lamp post during the incident.

    ???ntually, two policemen on horseback broke up the group of about ??? demonstrators, who dispersed as the Royal couple drove off to Government House, the residence of the State Governor, Sir Henry Wi???eke.
