    SIXTEEN JUNIOR NCOs AND PRIVATE SOLDIERS OF THE 11TH BATTALION, THE KENYA RIFLES, WERE CHARGED YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) BEFORE A COURT MARTIAL IN NAIROBI WITH TAKING PART IN A MUTINY IN JANUARY. ALL OF THEM DENIED THE CHARGE. THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE IS DEATH.

    THE PRESIDENT AND MEMBERS OF THE COURT MARTIAL ARE ALL AFRICAN OFFICERS OF THE KENYA RIFLES. THEY WERE TOLD BY THE PROSECUTION THAT THE ACCUSED MEN LED 300 OTHER SOLDIERS IN A MUTINY AT LANET CAMP, 90 MILES FROM NAIROBI, IN WHICH THEY BROKE INTO THE ARMOURY AND SEIZED CONTROL OF THE CAMP. THE PROSECUTION EXPLAINED THAT THE MUTINY LASTED FOR LESS THAN 24 HOURS AND WAS PUT DOWN BY BRITISH TROOPS AT THE REQUEST OF THE KENYA GOVERNMENT.

    THE COURT MARTIAL IS EXPECTED TO LAST ABOUT THREE WEEKS.
