  • Description

In India, former Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi said on Thursday (9 August) that she is not giving her unconditional support to the new government of Prime Minister Charan Singh and will decide her next step after studying the national situation. She was addressing a public rally in New Delhi, attended by thousand of her supporters.

SYNOPSIS: Thousand of Mrs Gandhi's loyal supporters turned out for the rally, which was arranged by the Delhi State Congress Committee.

Mrs. Gandhi threw her support behind Mr. Charan Singh in the recent government crisis --but on the condition that his government would aim to narrow the gap between the haves and have-nots in India. And she made clear to her supporters that her continuing support of the new administration would depend on its policies for the betterment of India's teeming millions -- including the untouchable and minorities.

According to political commentators in India -- both Mr. Singh and opposition leader Jagjivan Ram are busy wooing the support of Mrs. Gandhi and her seventy-one members of parliament, as the August twentieth government confidence vote approaches.

Mrs. Gandhi reminded her supporters that one of the new government's first pronouncements was that the special courts, set up to try her for alleged emergency rule offenses, should be banned. And in an apparent bid to win her confidence, opposition leader Mr. Ram assured Mrs. Gandhi that if she supports him in his attempt to bring down Mr. Singh's young government there will be no vendetta against her -- that her court cases will be dealt with in a so-called "normal-way".
