  • Description

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THIS YEAR'S OPEN WIMBLEDON TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS STARTED IN LONDON THE SUN SHONE WARMLY TODAY (SATURDAY) AND THERE WAS A FULL DAY'S PLAY ON ALL 16 COURTS WATCHED BY MORE THAN 26,000 SPECTATORS. IN ONE MARCH, CLARK GRAEBNER OF THE UNITED STATES STUNNED THE PACKED CENTRE COURT CROWD BY THE EASE OF HIS VICTORY OVER MANUEL SANTANA OF SPAIN.

GRAEBNER BEAT THE SIXTH SEEDED SANTANA 9-7, 6-2- 6-1. UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS, THE CHAMPIONSHIPS AT THIS STAGE WOULD BE DOWN TO THE QUARTER-FINALS IN BOTH MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SINGLES EVENTS. BUT THE WETTEST WIMBLEDON ON RECORD IS STILL ONE ROUND BEHIND IN THE MEN'S SINGLES AND TWO ROUNDS BEHIND IN THE WOMEN'S EVENT.

THE 24-YEAR-OLD GRAEBNER, AN AMATEUR, IS ONE OF FIVE AMERICANS WHO GO ON TO MONDAY'S QUARTER-FINALS. AUSTRALIA HAS SIX IN THE QUARTER-FINALS, INCLUDING THE TWO TOP FAVOURITES, PROFESSIONALS ROD LAVER AND KEN ROSEWALL. THE HONOURS BETWEEN THE AMATEURS AND PROFESSIONALS WERE TODAY UNEXPECTEDLY EVEN.

OF THE 22 PROFESSIONALS IN THE MEN'S SINGLES, ONLY EIGHT HAD SURVIVED TO REACH THE LAST 16 TODAY, WITH THE AMATEURS TAKING THE OTHER EIGHT PLACES. ELEVEN OF THE 14 PROFESSIONALS BEATEN IN THIS FIRST WEEK WERE KNOCKED OUT BY AMATEUR PLAYERS.

ANOTHER INDICATION OF THE NARROWNESS OF THE GAP BETWEEN THE LEADING AMATEURS AND THE PROFESSIONALS AS A GROUP IS THAT SIX OF THE 16 SEEDED MEN FAILED TO GAIN THEIR APPOINTED PLACES.
