  • Description

Rolling Stone Keith Richards was given a light sentence of one year's probation on charges of possing heroin, when he appeared in a Toronto courtroom on Tuesday (24 October). Charges of drug trafficking had been dropped, but Richards had faced up to seven years' jail if convicted possession. Judge Lloyd Graburn said he thought a jail term was pointless for the Rolling Stone's guitarist, who was found with twenty-two grams of heroin in his Toronto hotel room in February, 1977. The judge took into account the submitted medical reports, which said Richards had overcome his drug addiction. In a surprise move, the judge ordered Richards to appear in a concert for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind as part of his sentence.
