  • Description

CROWDS MASSED OUTSIDE THE CITY HALL IN NAIROBI MARCH 21, WHEN THE KENYA FEDERATION OF LABOUR EXPRESSED SUPPORT FOR THE NINE-DAY-OLD STRIKE OF NEARLY 6,000 GOVERNMENT WORKERS. A STATEMENT SIGNED BY 43 UNION OFFICIALS, REPRESENTING MANY AFFILIATED UNIONS, THREATENED TO CALL A GENERAL STRIKE THROUGHOUT THE COLONY UNLESS THE PAY DISPUTE WAS SETTLED BY MARCH 23.

EMERGENCY MEASURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO KEEP PUBLIC SERVICES IN OPERATION. CONVICTS HAVE BEEN CLEARING RUBBISH AWAY AND HELPING WITH OTHER SANITARY WORK; TRAINED EUROPEAN AND MANY AFRICAN WOMEN HAVE VOLUNTEERED TO WORK AT THE AFRICAN MATERNITY HOSPITAL. UNION OFFICIALS' ACTION IN PREVENTING NURSES FROM ATTENDING URGENT MATERNITY CASES HAS CAUSED THIS TO BE CALLED THE "LET THE BABIES DIE" STRIKE.

SEVERAL NAIROBI COUNCILLORS PROTESTED RECENTLY AFTER LIEUTENANT-COLONEL BURNETT, COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE SCOTS GUARDS, HAD LED HIS MEN IN TO CLEAN AND SCRUB THE HOSPITAL. COUNCILLORS LUGONZO SAID: "WE RESENT THE ARMY'S INTERFERENCE IN WHAT IS STRICTLY A TRADE UNION AFFAIR. THEY HAD NO RIGHT TO ACT AS STRIKE BREAKERS."
A K.F.L. SPOKESMAN SAID MARCH 21 THAT A TELEGRAM HAD BEEN SENT TO MR TOM MBOYA, THE FEDERATION'S GENERAL SECRETARY - NOW AT THE KENYA CONFERENCE IN LONDON - GIVING HIM THE PLAN OF ACTION FOR THE PROPOSED GENERAL STRIKE. THIS WAS THAT MEMBERS OF THE KENYA GOVERNMENT WORKERS' UNION SHOULD STRIKE THROUGHOUT THE COLONY THAT DAY, THAT ALL WORKERS IN NAIROBI SHOULD COME OUT ON STRIKE MARCH 24, AND THAT A GENERAL STRIKE WAS "LIKELY" ON MONDAY, MARCH 26.
