  • Description

A daring communist attack on Phnom Penh airport before dawn today, transformed almost every plane in Cambodia's tiny air force into twisted heaps of smouldering wreck.

What saboteurs' satchel charges, rockets, and mortars failed to achieve, was finished by raging fires that still smoked 12 hours after the attack.

The airport is now sealed off and no accurate count of destroyed planes is available.

As far as its known the casualty tell will be heavily lopsided in the communists' favour, with the number of Cambodian dead and wounded now almost certain to go well above 100.

The communist side is known to have lost one or perhaps two men killed.

Three Phnom Penh hospitals are crammed with wounded women and children, most of them dependents of soldiers at a large engineering storage camp and two principal ammunition dumps, one of which belongs to the South Vietnamese army.
