  • Description

Argentina's labour problems are reaching crisis point and the year-old Government of President Maria Estela Peron is in danger of losing its vitally-needed union support.

The crisis was sparked by a fifty percent devaluation of the Peso ordered by Finance Minister, Celesti Rodrigo. Some unions negotiated independently with management and, in some cases, secured wage increases of around one hundred percent. Senor Rodrigo threatened to annul these increases.

The heat was taken out of the dispute when President Peron agreed to meet labour leaders. Thousands of workers who held demonstrations in protest over the threatened wage cuts agreed to end a seven-hour strike which crippled the country.

President Peron draws her support from the three-and-a-half-million workers in the General Confederation of Labour (CGT). She faces losing their support if she backs Senor Rodrigo's plan to annul the agreements worked out in free bargaining.
