Background: One of West Germany's most sensational espionage cases began in Dusseldorf on Tuesday (24 June). It was the first day of the trial of Guenter Guillaume, a former close adviser of ex-Chancellor Willy Brandt, who has been accused of treason and breach of the Official Secrets Act.
Also standing trial in a specially built courtroom is Herr Guillaume's wife, Chirstel. The couple, who are alleged to have infiltrated into West Germany from East Germany as spies 19 years ago, have been in custody for 14 months.
The Guillaume scandal--in April 1974--caused a political crisis and the resignation of Nobel Peace Prize-winner Herr Brandt as head of the Bonn Government.
The indictment of the Guillaumes runs to nearly 50 pages, which under West German law, may not be quoted from. Over 50 witnesses are expected to be called. these are expected to include prominent present and former political figures in Bonn.
The special courtroom was deemed necessary to prevent any leakage of the proceedings, much of which will be held in camera. Those entering the courtroom for the trial, which could last from three weeks to three months, will be searched, not only for weapons but also for any recording devices.
