    GHANA AND BRITAIN HAVE SIGNED AN AGREEMENT WHEREBY GHANA WILL RECEIVED A GBP4,000,000 STERLING LOAN AS SUPPORT FOR ITS BALANCE OF PAYMENTS POSITION.

    THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED IN ACCRA LAST MONDAY (AUGUST 21) BY THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER TO GHANA, MR HAROLD SMEDLEY, AND GHANA'S COMMISSIONER FOR FINANCE, BRIGADIER AFRICA.

    THE LOAN -- AT LOW INTEREXT AND REPAYABLE OVER 25 YEARS -- WILL BE USED FOR BUYING BRITISH GOODS SUCH AS SPARE PARTS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES, FERTILISER AND AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT. BRIGADIER AFRIFA SAID THAT SINCE THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL HAD STARTED GOVERNING IN THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT HAD SHOWN "REMARKABLE UNDERSTANDING AND FULL APPRECIATION" OF GHANA'S ECONOMIC PROBLEMS.

    HE STATED THAT ALTHOUGH BRITAIN HAD ITS OWN ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES, IT HAD NOT HESITATED TO HELP GHANA. IN THANKING BRITAIN FOR THE LOAN, BRIGADIER AFRIFA SAID THAT THE AGREEMENT WAS FURTHER EVIDENCE OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S "GENEROSITY AND CO-OPERATION." MR SMEDLEY SAID IN REPLY THAT HE HOPED THE LOAN WOULD HELP GHANA REBUILD ITS ECONOMY.
