  • Description

Negroes at Houston, Texas, sought to enrol at six white schools Sept 7 as authorities made another unsuccessful effort to delay grade-a-year integration of the nation's largest segregated school district. Plainclothes policemen patrolled corridors at two schools but no incidents occurred as Autumn classes began.

Federal Judge Connally's order that integration of the 170,000-student school district begin today with the first grade was upheld yesterday by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals at New Orleans. Requests for stays earlier had been denied both by Connally and the New Orleans court.

School board member Stone Wells last night obtained board approval of a motion that instructed Supt. John McFarland to accept applications from negroes but to delay actual enrolment.

Today's applications, like those of last week, were referred to a special three-member committee which is checking them against eligibility rules established by the board after Connally signed his order last week.

Efforts have been made to integrate only six of the district's 107 white schools. Officials predicted today's opening day enrolment for the first grade would approximate 19,500 and include about 4,000 negroes.
