  • Description

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat told a press conference in Cairo on Wednesday (31 October) one reason he accepted the United Nations ceasefire was that "I was not prepared to fight the United States".

He went on: "I have fought Israel for eleven days...but I am not ready to fight America."
Speaking in Arabic, President Sadat described the current stand of the United States in the Middle East as "constructive". He said he was waiting the visit of the U.S. Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger on November 6.

During the first eleven days of fighting Israel had lost 500 tanks in Sinai, according to the President. He said Israel had also lost a large number of planes during that period. Mr. Sadat said israel's military strength would only have lasted 14-days before the United States "opened its arsenal to provide Israel with weapons".

The Egyptian leader was addressing more than 350 newsmen form all over the world in the meeting hall of the Central Committee of the ruling Arab Socialist Union. The conference was televised and broadcast live.

Referring to the U.S/Soviet ceasefire proposal, President Sadat said he had accepted it for two reasons. The first was because the two super-powers gave guarantees and assurances that the ceasefire would be properly they occupied on October 22 - when the first ceasefire came into force - and because it stipulated immediate implementation of Security Council Resolution 242 of November, 1967.

The 1977 Resolution called for Israeli withdrawal form Arab land occupied in the June, 1967 war.

His second reason was that he could not fight against the United States, he said.

In a reference to those who had opposed his acceptance of the ceasefire both at home and in other Arab countries, President Sadat said: "I know there was a reaction here, in the Arab countries and in the army, but these were my reasons for accepting the ceasefire".
