The new Greek Government, at its first Cabinet meeting on Monday (29 July, 1974) decided to dismiss senior civil servants in all Ministries and all 52 prefects responsible for regional administration throughout Greece. Naturally, the Cabinet reviewed the Cyprus situation as, with Geneva Peace Talks in the balance,t he Greek Armed Forces maintained their state of alert.

The dismissal announcement made it clear that Mr. Constantine Karamanlis, the Premier, is keen to show his Government's willingness to tackle the military regime's penetration of State Institutions even while Cyprus remains the most serious problem and claims the major share of the Government's attention.

All the prefects and other dismissed civil servants had been appointed since the 1967 military coup.

During the 90-minute meeting Ministers were briefed about the Cyprus negotiations. the Greek Government withdrew a request for a meeting of the NATO Foreign Ministers Council to consider the situation in view of the UN Security Council session on the issue.
