  • Description

UNDER THE COMMAND OF LT. COL. ROY J. HERTE, THE U.S. 3RD BATTALION, 7TH REGIMENT, 199TH LIGHT INFANTRY BRIGADE, ON THURSDAY (12 DEC.) TRACKED FOR VIET CONG ALONG ONE OF THE MAIN INFILTRATION ROUTES ONLY 25 MILES (40 KMS) WEST OF SAIGON. THIS MOVE WAS PART OF THE FULL ALERT IN EXPECTATION THAT THE GUERRILLAS MIGHT LAUNCH AN ATTACK TO GIVE THE NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT A BETTER STAND AT THE PARIS PEACE TALKS.

THE GENERAL ALERT IN SAIGON WHICH HAS ORDERED AMERICAN SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS OFF THE STREET IN CASE OF A VIET CONG ATTACK, WAS LATER EXTENDED TO WARN AUSTRALIANS AND NEW ZEALANDERS TO STAY IN UNLESS ON OFFICIAL BUSINESS.

FOR FOUR DAYS A HEAVY POUNDING BY THE GIANT B-52 STRATO-FORTRESSES ON THE INFILTRATION ROUTES LEADING FROM THE CAMBODIAN BORDER INDICATED THAT ATTACKS MIGHT COME FROM THAT AREA.

FOLLOWING UP THE COMBINING, ARTILLERY TROOPS MOVED INTO THE AREA TO TRACK FOR VIET CONG GUERRILLAS. LT. COL. HERTE'S BATTALION, ARRIVING BY HELICOPTER, PATROLLED AN AREA 25 MILES (40 KMS) WEST OF SAIGON. BOMB CRATERS, MAINLY FROM B-52 RAIDS, WERE CHECKED FOR MINES OR TRAPS. ONE OF THESE CRATERS WAS FOUND TO HAVE BEEN USED AS A MASS GRAVE. AMONG THE ARMS USED BY THE U.S. TROOPS WERE THE POWERFUL M.79 GRENADE LAUNCHERS, USED BY THE PLATOON COMMANDER BY LT. MIKE BARRES - KNOWN AS "MIGHTY MOUSE" BECAUSE HE IS SMALL AND TOUGH. WHEN THE RECONNAISSANCE OPERATION WAS FINISHED, THE 25-MAN, FAST-MOVING PLATOON SIGNALLED FOR THE HELICOPTERS WHICH COME INTO PICK THEM UP AND CARRY THEM TO THE TO THE NEXT ASSAULT AREA.
