  • Description

Sudanese President Jaafar Nimeiry visited Egypt for the first time in three years Monday (February 11) to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East situation with President Anwar Sadat.

President Nimery Flew in to an undisclosed airport in the western desert and went for the talk at President Sadat's rest house near Alexandria.

Relations between Sudan and Egypt were soured in September 1972 by hostility between President Nimeiry and Libya's Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. President Nimerly refused to allow an airborne Libyan force on its way to Uganda to fly over Sudanese territory alienating both Egypt and Libya, then heading toward a merger.

The major topics at Monday's talks were the Middle East situation, co-operation and improving bilateral relations.

The meeting was a prelude to a limited Arab summit conference to be held to discuss the use of the Arab oil weapon, and political confrontation with Israel.

The countries expected to attend the conference -- called by President Sadat -- were Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Algeria, Morocco and Syria.
