  • Description

PROTESTANTS DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF PORTADOWN IN NORTHERN IRELAND TODAY TO PROTEST AGAINST SOME OF THE FINDINGS OF THE HUNT COMMISSION.

THE DEMONSTRATIONS PASSED OFF QUIETLY AND THE NUMBERS FELL FAR SHORT OF THE 2,000 THE ORGANISERS WERE EXPECTING.

THE PROTEST WAS MAINLY AGAINST THE HUNT COMMISSION'S RECOMMENDATIONS THAT THE B SPECIALS BE DISBANDED. THE B SPECIALS, AN AUXILIARY POLICE FORCE, ARE TOTALLY PROTESTANT IN MEMBERSHIP AND ARE SEEN BY MANY NORTHERN IRISH PROTESTANTS AS A LAST LINE OF DEFENCE AGAINST INCURSIONS FROM THE REPUBLICAN SOUTH OF IRELAND.
