Background: SIR HUMPHREY GIBBS, GOVERNOR OF RHODESIA, ATTENDED A REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE AT SALISBURY CATHEDRAL THIS MORNING (SUNDAY) - INDEPENDENCE ON THURSDAY. IT WAS TAKEN AS A SIGN THAT THE GOVERNOR'S MOVEMENT ARE NOT BEING RESTRICTED. AFTER THE SERVICE, SIR HUMPHREY RETURNED TO GOVERNMENT HOUSE, WHICH HE HAS BEEN ORDERED BY MR SMITH TO VACATE.

SINCE THE ILLEGAL SEIZURE OF INDEPENDENCE BY THE SMITH GOVERNMENT, MORE THAN 500 PEOPLE HAVE CALLED AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE TO SIGN THE GOVERNOR'S VISITORS' BOOK... AN ACTION WHICH COULD BE INTERPRETED AS A GESTURE OF PROTEST AGAINST UDI, AND ONE OF LOYALTY TO THE QUEEN.

PRESIDENT KAUNDA SAID YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) THAT HE WOULD COMMAND ZAMBIAN TROOPS ALONG THE COMMON BORDER WITH RHODESIA "TO ACT IF SMITH AND HIS REBEL MINISTERS MISBEHAVE." ZAMBIAN AND RHODESIAN TROOPS FACE EACH OTHER AT SEVERAL POINTS ALONG THE BORDER, WHICH IS MARKED BY THE ZAMBESI RIVER. THE ZAMBIANS HAVE BEEN DIGGING TRENCHES, AND REPORTER FROM LIVINGSTONE INDICATE THAT RHODESIAN TROOPS HAVE BEEN DIGGING TRENCHES ON THEIR SIDE OF THE VICTORIA FALLS AS WELL. TRAFFIC IS FLOWING FREELY BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

(MR SMITH'S GOVERNMENT HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT SINCE THEY DECLARED INDEPENDENCE UNILATERALLY, MORE THAN 2,000 TELEGRAMS OF CONGRATULATION HAVE POURED INTO HIS OFFICE. MORE THAN ONE THOUSAND CAME FROM SOUTH AFRICA, 500 FROM WITHIN RHODESIA ITSELF, AND 78 FROM BRITAIN.)
