  • Description

JORDAN HAS ASKED FOR AN URGENT MEETING OF THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER THE ISRAELI ATTACK ON THE NORTH JORDAN TOWN OF IRBID ON TUESDAY. A REPORT FROM THE AREA SAYS 34 PEOPLE, INCLUDING WOMEN, CHILDREN AND OLD PEOPLE, WERE KILLED AND ANOTHER 134 WOUNDED -- 55 OF THEM SERIOUSLY.

THE TOWN WAS SHELLED AND BOMBED BY ISRAELI PLANES DURING A CLASH, WHICH LASTED MOST OF THE DAY, WITH JORDANIAN ARTILLERY. MANY BUILDINGS IN IRBID WERE STILL BURNING WHEN FOREIGN NEWSMEN ARRIVED. SOLDIERS STRUGGLED TO PUT OUT THE FIRES WITH HOSES AND BUCKETS OF EARTH DUG UP BY VOLUNTEERS.

JORDAN CLAIMS THAT IRBID SUFFERED TWO SWIFT ATTACKS IN THE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING, EACH LASTING 10 TO 15 MINUTES. THEY CAME ON THE EVE OF THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE OUTBREAK OF LAST YEAR'S ARAB-ISRAELI WAR.
