  • Description

Hurricane Camille spread its trail of death and destruction into the Virginias there 48 people were known dead and another 100 are still missing.

The deaths have been caused by flooding as a result of Camille's rains. In Richmond, Virginia workmen erected sandbags dikes, families fled low-lying homes and factory workers moved rear to high ground as floods spawned by the hurricane advanced from the devastated hill country to the west.

While Richmond awaited a forecast crest of 34 feet -- 25 feet above flood stage -- the James River and its mountain tributaries began dropping toward normal about 100 miles west of Richmond. In Virginia, the loss of life occurred in the hill section where victims had little or no warning of the floods, but damage to farm and ??? property was heavy all along the 130 miles to Richmond.

Virginia's Governor Mills Godwin Jr. made a 500 mile serial survey of the areas most severely hit and declared the James River basin and other flooded sections a major disaster area. He asked President Pixon for federal aid to help restore the inundated area.
