Weightlifting...and competitors from 20 countries took part in the five-day Friendship Cup, which ended in Moscow on Monday (20 March). As usual the overall standard of lifting was high, and altogether five world records were broken.
SYNOPSIS: With the 1980 Olympics being held in Moscow, it was an ideal opportunity for officials to test and check equipment.
In the super-heavyweight section the bronze medal went to Stock of the United States. Here he attempted to snatch 157.7 kilos (347 pounds)...and succeeded.
The gold medal, as expected, went to World and European medallist Aslanbeck Enaldiev. In the snatch, he had no problems with 180 kilos (397 pounds). He jerked 245 kilos (540 pounds) and it gave him a total of 425 kilos (937 pounds).
The silver medallist was Nilson of Sweden, who successfully snatched 162.5 kilos (388 pounds).
Enaldiev then tried to beat the world record of the legendary Vassili Alexeev, but failed.
