SYNOPSIS: A United Nations committee entrusted with the task of investigating the plight of refugees from occupied Arab territory arrived in Amman on Wednesday.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdullah Salah met the three-man committee, which is comprised of members from Ceylon, Somalia and Yugoslavia. Their special brief is to look into allegations of the suppression of human rights in occupied Arab territories, including reports of the torture of prisoners.

The committee session in Jordan is due to last five days and will include a visit to a Palestinian refugee camp. Last year, the same committee pursued a similar line of investigation in other Arab countries. The first witness questioned on Thursday, a tailor from the West Bank of Jordan, accused the Israeli authorities of imprisoning him on no specific charge and of torturing him in an effort to obtain information about Arab guerrillas.
